Vandaag kwam ik tijdens het lezen van ‘Pledging my time, Conversations with Bob Dylan band members’ van Dylanoloog Ray Padgett achter een opzienbarend feit omtrent de vader van president Donald Trump, vastgoedmagnaat Fred Trump.

Folk legende Woody Guthrie (1912-1967) huurde begin jaren 50 van de vorige eeuw voor korte tijd een appartement in de wijk Brooklyn, New York dat deel uitmaakte van het appartementencomplex Beach Haven, eigenaar Fred Trump.

In het huurcontract stond expliciet dat de appartementen alleen door blanken bewoond mochten worden. Uit protest tegen dit pure staaltje racisme schreef Woody Guthrie het nummer ‘Old man Trump’:

I suppose that Old Man Trump knows just how much racial hate

He stirred up in that bloodpot of human hearts

When he drawed that color line

Here at his Beach Haven family project

Beach Haven ain’t my home!
